The crust which forms on super?cial injured areas. It is composed of FIBRIN, which is exuded from the raw surface, together with blood corpuscles and epithelial cells entangled in its meshes. Healing takes place naturally under this protection, and the scab dries up and falls o? when healing is complete. Scabs appearing on the face without any previous abrasion are usually caused by an infection (see IMPETIGO).
